UNIPMA and UiTM Malaysia Advance Machine Learning Research to Promote Data-Driven Zakat Management
UNIPMA – Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA), in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Kedah, Malaysia, is conducting supervised machine learning-based research to support more effective and data-driven zakat management. Through a study entitled “Applying Supervised Machine Learning on Gold and Silver Zakat Collection (Comparative Study Malaysia and Indonesia),” the research team analyzes and predicts the potential collection of gold and silver zakat in Indonesia and Malaysia.
This collaborative research represents an effort to apply artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the field of Islamic finance. The findings are expected to provide recommendations for zakat management institutions to improve payment compliance while optimizing the distribution of zakat funds.
A member of the research team from UNIPMA, Juwari, explained that the study utilizes historical data on gold and silver zakat collection to identify trends, recognize patterns, and develop predictive models that support decision-making.
“This research applies a supervised machine learning approach to process historical gold and silver zakat collection data. Through this process, we are able to identify trends, recognize patterns, and develop predictive models that can assist zakat management institutions in making more informed decisions,” he said.
In addition to developing predictive models, the research also compares zakat collection systems in Indonesia and Malaysia. The comparative study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of zakat management in both countries while identifying best practices that may serve as references for future policy development.
The collaboration involves academics from two universities. The UiTM Kedah research team consists of Khairul Adilah Ahmad, Norin Rahayu Samsudin, and Taniza Tajuddin, while the UNIPMA team comprises Moch Yusuf Asyhari, Pratiwi Susanti, and Juwari.
The research has been underway since 2023. It began with a joint discussion between the Indonesian and Malaysian research teams on 29–31 May 2023, followed by data collection at BAZNAS Madiun City on 5 July 2023. Preliminary findings were presented at a conference on 7 November 2023 before the project continued with follow-up discussions in January 2024 and January 2025.
Through this collaboration, UNIPMA and UiTM Kedah reaffirm their commitment to advancing research that leverages artificial intelligence to support digital transformation in Islamic finance.
The research outcomes are expected to serve as valuable references for zakat management institutions in developing more effective, accurate, and data-driven systems, thereby improving the quality of zakat services and management in both Indonesia and Malaysia.
Currently, admissions for the Regular and Prior Learning Recognition (RPL) programs for the 2026/2027 Academic Year are officially open.
